RUTLAND COUNTY GOLF COURSES

I for one, am not a golfer, but some of these golf courses make me want to become one. Rutland County is home to seven golf courses. One has a lake view, while many others are tucked away in the woods. Here is your guide to outdoor golfing in the area.

Rutland Country Club

Starting out in Rutland, Vermont is the Rutland Country Club.

This 18-hole, semi-private golf course was established in 1901, and ranked #2 in Golf Magazine’s Best Golf Courses in Vermont in 2020/2021.

This course is situated about one mile from Rutland’s Downtown. But don’t let the proximity of the downtown hustle and bustle fool you, this course is on a quiet street where you will feel surrounded by nature.

Proctor-Pittsford Country Club

Heading North on Route 7 is the Proctor-Pittsford Country Club in Pittsford, Vermont.

This course offers views of both the Green Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains. Just imagine playing a round of golf here in the fall while the leaves on the trees are red, orange, and yellow. Not to mention the beautiful marble gates that greet you as you drive in.

Golfers have the option to rent a cart or walk the course, and you can pick between nine or the full eighteen holes. Proctor-Pittsford Country Club also hosts tournaments and events throughout the summer.

Neshobe Golf Club

Continuing North is the Neshobe Golf Club in Brandon, Vermont.

This 18-hole golf course also offers mountain views, but unlike many “typical mountain courses,” there are no severe up or downhill lies, or blind shots.

This course is open to the public, but tee times are recommended. I visited the golf course on a Sunday afternoon when groups of all ages were heading out for their tee time including kids with their grandparents, and groups of middle-aged friends.

Stonehedge Golf and FootGolf Course

Heading South on Route 7 is the Stonehedge Golf and FootGolf Course in Clarendon, Vermont.

The second you step out of your car, the smell of pine trees greets you, letting you know you are about to have a relaxing time on the course.

This 18-hole course averages a par-3 for each hole, making it perfect for those who are beginning.

The same course is also used for FootGolf, a combination of soccer and golf! Players kick a ball toward a 21” FootGolf cup in as few shots or kicks as possible.

Lake St. Catherine Country Club

To the Southwest is the Lake St. Catherine Country Club in Poultney, Vermont.

If you are looking for a scenic drive down a windy road to go golfing, this is your best option.

This course was created in 1925, as a nine-hole golf course but was expanded to 18-holes in the mid-1990s. Because it is located on rolling hills, you may find yourself playing 6600 yards, which is 3.75 miles. My advice is to check this course out during the fall once the colors begin to change on the trees.

Bomoseen Golf Club

Staying on the Western side of Rutland County is the Bomoseen Golf Club in Castleton, Vermont.

This course begins at the bottom of Lake Bomoseen, creating a picturesque view of the lake during your tee time.

When the course was originally built in 1933, it was 18-holes, but in 1953, it was redesigned to the 9-hole course it is today. It is only a par-35, but the course has long holes and is surrounded by beauty.

Killington Golf Course

Heading East is the Killington Golf Course in Killington, Vermont.

If you are dreaming of snowy days to ski or ride, this may be the mountain-terrain course for you. Located on Killington Mountain, you will be able to admire the trails while teeing off.

Collared shirts are required, and Killington Golf Course asks players not to wear blue jeans, sweatpants, or gym shorts. The pace of play is about 4.5 hours per round, or 15 minutes per hole.

Green Mountain National Golf Course

Last but not least is the Green Mountain National Golf Course, also located in Killington, Vermont.

This was the course that made me want to become a golfer.

This course is in a very peaceful setting, surrounded by trees and even centuries-old rock formations carved by glaciers! If you do not believe me, check out this video created by Golf Destination.
